Shopify's Shipping Label UI Update: Community Insights & Practical Workarounds

Hey fellow store owners!

As someone who spends a lot of time diving into the Shopify community forums, I often see common frustrations bubble up. Recently, there's been quite a buzz, or should I say, a bit of a rumble, about some changes to the Shopify shipping label interface. A thread titled "New Shipping Page UI interface is terrible" started by @EMC4D really hit a nerve, and it’s clear many of you are feeling the pain.

It’s always a little jarring when a core part of your daily workflow changes, especially something as critical as shipping. EMC4D articulated the main issues perfectly: the new UI no longer clearly shows the default package size, which is a big deal when it often gets it wrong for multi-item orders. Plus, the rates default to a "recommended" list, hiding other options and removing the ability to sort by price at a glance. What used to be a 1-2 click process now feels like a hidden-object game.

The Hidden Package Predicament: Why It Matters

The biggest concern raised by EMC4D, and echoed by others like @Jack_BuildsShopify, is the missing visibility of the default package size. When you're shipping multi-item orders, Shopify's automatic package selection can sometimes be off. This means you could be paying too much, or worse, sending a package that's incorrectly sized for the label, leading to headaches down the line. @ChrisPaketInternat rightly pointed out the risk: "I’d be careful with the package size especially when an order contains multiple items."

What to Do About Missing Package Info:

  • Manual Double-Check: Until Shopify addresses this, the safest bet for multi-item orders is to manually double-check your package dimensions and weight before purchasing the label. It adds a step, but it beats dealing with carrier adjustments or returns.
  • Is the Section Completely Gone? If you find that the entire "Package and weight" section, including the dropdown to select a package, is missing for you, that's not just a UI change – that sounds like a regression. @ashinxavier and @v.marychenka both suggest this is a bug worth contacting Shopify Support about, ideally with a screenshot.

Taming Your Rates: Getting Back to Price Order & Full Visibility

Another major point of frustration is the change in how shipping rates are displayed. The new UI defaults to "recommended" options, often showing only three, and doesn't sort by price. This forces extra clicks to see all eligible services and compare costs effectively.

How to Manage Your Shipping Service Display:

Good news! There are settings you can tweak to get more control over what you see:

  1. Go to your Shopify Admin and navigate to Settings.
  2. Click on Shipping and delivery.
  3. Under the "Shipping labels" section, click Manage preferred carriers.
  4. Here, you can control which carriers and services make it onto your "short list" that appears by default.
  5. When you're actually on the label purchase flow, you'll likely see an option to switch from your preferred/recommended list to All to view every eligible rate. It's an extra click, yes, but it ensures you see all options.

Beating the Click-Creep: Efficiency Hacks

More clicks mean more time, and time is money, especially for busy store owners. The community shared some excellent tips for cutting down on the manual effort:

  • Bulk Label Creation: For those processing a significant number of orders, buying labels in bulk is a game-changer. Both @ashinxavier and @v.marychenka highlighted this. You can purchase up to 250 labels at once directly from your Orders page. Just make sure your table preferences are saved, and you're good to go!
  • External Shipping Tools: If shipping is a truly massive part of your daily workflow, @ChrisPaketInternat suggested considering a separate shipping tool. These tools often offer more robust control over package dimensions, carrier/service selection, and tracking, making you less dependent on Shopify's UI changes.

Can We Go Back? The Reality of UI Changes

:waving_hand: Unfortunately, the consensus from the community, and my own experience, is that there's no magic button to revert to the old UI or force a default "sort by price" option. Once these changes roll out, they're generally here to stay in their current form.

So, what's a store owner to do? The most effective path forward is to provide direct feedback to Shopify. The more users who voice their specific pain points and request features like package size visibility and default price sorting, the higher the chance these elements might be revisited in future updates.

It’s never fun to adapt to changes that feel like a step backward in efficiency, but by leveraging the community's collective wisdom and making a few adjustments to your workflow, you can definitely minimize the disruption. Keep an eye on those package dimensions, utilize bulk label creation, and make your voice heard with Shopify feedback. We're all in this together!
